SIM Cards and Data in Saudi Arabia
Data matters more than ever on Umrah — Nusuk permits, Rawdah slots, maps and calls home all need a connection. Here are the two simple ways to sort it.
Option 1 — buy an eSIM before you fly
The easiest route. Buy a Saudi data eSIM online from the UK (or whichever country you are travelling from), scan the QR code they email you, and you land already connected — no queues, no paperwork.
- Works the moment you land, so you can message family and open Nusuk straight away
- Your UK number stays active for calls and texts on your normal SIM
- Check your phone supports eSIM first — most iPhones from XS onward and recent Androids do
- Install it on hotel or home WiFi before you travel, then switch it on at the airport
Option 2 — buy a local SIM when you arrive
Zain, STC and Mobily all have counters in the arrivals hall at Jeddah and Madinah airports, and shops on almost every street in Makkah and Madinah. Take your passport — it is required to register the SIM.
- Tourist bundles typically run for 7 to 30 days with generous data and local calls
- Registration takes a few minutes and is done for you in the shop
- Airport counters are convenient but city shops are usually cheaper
- Top-ups are sold in supermarkets and small shops everywhere
The three Saudi networks
STC
The largest network, with the strongest coverage around the Haram in Makkah and Madinah and along the Haramain train line.
Zain
Very popular with pilgrims. Competitive tourist bundles and plenty of shops within walking distance of both Harams.
Mobily
A solid third choice with good value data packages and wide availability at airports and in shopping centres.
Ask for a discount
Many SIM counters in Makkah and Madinah are staffed by agents who speak Urdu, Bengali, Arabic, Hindi or Turkish. If you find one who speaks your language, ask politely about a better deal — it is very common to be given a discount or extra data.

- Compare the bundle in data, days and price before paying, and ask them to activate it while you are standing there.
- Test the connection before you leave the counter — send a message and load a page.
- Keep your UK SIM in the phone for banking texts, and use the Saudi SIM or eSIM for data.
- WhatsApp calls work normally in Saudi Arabia, so a data-only plan is usually enough.
- Hotel WiFi near the Haram can be slow at prayer times; your own data is far more reliable for Nusuk bookings.
