How to Prepare for Umrah

Spiritual and practical preparation before you travel to the sacred lands.

Begin with intention

Umrah begins long before you board a flight. Setting a sincere intention, seeking forgiveness, settling debts and clearing the air with family are all part of the preparation, and travellers often say this is what makes the journey feel light.

Reading through the rites in advance helps enormously. When each step is familiar, you can spend your time in worship rather than working out what comes next.

Learn a little before you go

Memorise the talbiyah, read a short guide to tawaf and sa'i, and agree with your family how you will handle busy periods around the Haram. Simple things — a meeting point, a phrase everyone knows, a plan for prayer times — make a real difference.

Health and fitness

Umrah involves a lot of walking, often on marble in warm weather. Building up gentle daily walks in the weeks beforehand pays off, and comfortable footwear matters more than almost anything else you pack.

Speak to your GP or a travel clinic well ahead of departure about vaccinations. UK health authorities highlight meningitis vaccination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, and Saudi health regulations for Umrah are updated each year.

Documents and admin

Check passport validity, arrange travel insurance, keep digital and paper copies of your documents, and install the Nusuk app before you fly so permits are easy to book once you arrive.

Rules for visas, permits and vaccinations are reviewed regularly by the Saudi authorities, so please treat this as general background and confirm the current position on GOV.UK, the official Saudi visa portal and the Nusuk app before you book. We will also confirm the latest requirements with you when you enquire.
